Lowline Angus

The Benefits of Lowline Angus

With the majority of the world going to factory farming, the massive meat recalls can be frightening. If you have a little homestead with smaller acreage and want to raise your own beef the Lowline Angus may be the perfect solution. This breed was developed in Australia and is known for its calm temperament. We chose the Lowline breed for our ranch because of their small size, docile nature, and feed efficiency. They are an excellent option for sustainable, grass-fed meat. The combination of these traits makes it a wonderful breed for smaller acreages. We do not raise a huge herd. We do this simply to raise our own healthy, sustainable meat.

The Benefits

  • Our entire family is involved in raising our food which means our kids deal with the cattle- lowlines are much more kid-friendly than larger breeds. Of course, common sense, safety, and caution should always be taken when you are around cattle- they are still cattle! However, the lowlines calm nature makes them a great option for 4H projects.
  • They are more efficient and thus great for smaller acreage.
  • Tender and flavorful meat
  • Lower impact on fencing
  • Since they are a smaller breed there is less finished product (thus less freezer space, ideal for our family of 4)
  • Even though they are smaller, they are very efficient converters of grass to meat. They have minimal waste meaning more pounds of beef per acre.
  • Can finish on grass with early maturation being approximately 14 months
  • They are short at 39″-43″ tall compared to 55″-59″ for typical cattle
  • Naturally polled- no horns! another kid-friendly (and mom-friendly) feature!
  • Known for easy calving and strong maternal instincts

Why raise your own cattle for beef?

  • We know that our cattle have had a lovely, quality life.
  • We know what has gone into our cattle or perhaps I should say, what has not gone into our cattle. They are not exposed to GMO feeds, pesticides, antibiotics, or any other chemicals.
  • I love having all our meat in the freezer- makes meal planning a breeze.
  • More cost effective for excellent cuts of beef.
  • Our kids learn responsibility and compassion for animals. Plus they understand where their food comes from.
