Nothing says cozy, starry night with a campfire more than S’mores. Most families consider this classic campfire dessert a camping staple. The problem is- I don’t like to get my hands all sticky and messy, especially when we are camping. As a mom, I also don’t like to have to clean sticky little hands after an evening of S’mores. For this reason, when camping we would occasionally make s’mores but often opted for just roasted marshmallows. Until this happened…

Rad Cups- our families twist on the classic S’mores

One night as we sat around the campfire on our ranch, our kids asked for S’mores. We were home so all the messiness could be easily cleaned up. I ran back to the house to gather the necessary items but we were out of graham crackers. This is how we came up with Rad Cups (lovingly called this by our children as a nod to our last name). They have become our family go-to for a delicious, yummy (less messy) campfire dessert. The better way to do S’Mores!

So what is it that I used instead of graham crackers?

Ice Cream Cones. Plain old cake cones. And they were a hit! We have abandoned the old s‘mores and introduce the Rad Cups to everyone who camps with us. Sure, you can call them campfire cones if you like, but we like to stick with our personal take on the dessert name:) They have all the deliciousness of s’mores in a nice handheld cup that is easier for kids to manage and eat with less mess.

S’mores Re-Designed

To make your own Rad Cups you will need:

  • Marshmallows
  • Ice Cream Cones (we always use the plain cake cones because they balance nicely on the roasting prongs- see below-but you could try sugar cones or waffle cones)
  • Chocolate Bars
  • Peanut Butter or Almond Butter (optional, but oh so yummy! and has always been a s’mores necessity for us)

Fill the cone with peanut butter and chocolate. Roast your marshmallows and then place them in the cone.

Kids can now easily enjoy their cone filled with gooey, marshmallow, chocolate, peanut butter deliciousness.

We use roasting sticks similar to these and place the cone in between the prongs while roasting the marshmallows- this allows the chocolate to melt. Just be careful that you don’t burn the cone.

Experiment and make them your own. The cones can be filled with all sorts of items- think nutella, raspberries, white chocolate, bananas. Take your kids’ favorite treats and create your own s‘mores re-designed!

Then give them your own family name!
